“Soldiers Cooking”
Picture study...
In this 1798 etching, two women are depicted scrubbing laundry in a stream while a group of red-coated British soldiers rest near a cookfire at a military camp.
Artist Thomas Rowlandson created this engraving of an unidentified British unit during the French Revolutionary Wars. The work provides a rare depiction of women who accompanied the army and performed essential services, including laundry and mending, for soldiers at military encampments.
